Full announcement from Environment and Conservation Organization:

(HENDERSONVILLE, NC, December 13, 2012) – In olden times, Winter Solstice was a frightening time. The crops were dead and food was scarce and people prayed for the return of spring. Now we know that winter is the time for the earth to rest and renew for the new spring just around the horizon. To celebrate the winter solstice -- the longest night of the year – ECO invites the community to join them on a nighttime walk on Friday, December 21st to Hooker Falls in DuPont State Forest from 7 to 9 p.m. Meet in the Hooker Falls parking lot on DuPont/Staton Road in DuPont State Forest.

We'll stroll along an old road bed one-fourth mile to the base of Hooker Falls. In the dark of night we'll create soft moonlight by shining our flashlights upon the falls … creating a quiet moment to celebrate the return of the sun to the northern hemisphere at the solstice and the new solar year.

Bring a thermos of warm drink, for we'll toast the sun's return once we meander back to the parking lot. Bring a flashlight for use when necessary. The event will be cancelled in case of inclement weather. We highly recommend registering in advance so that you can be contacted in case of cancellation.

The winter solstice stroll, sponsored by the Environmental and Conservation Organization (ECO), is open to the public of all ages at no charge. For more information, call ECO at 828-692-0385 or visit the website at www.eco-wnc.org. Visit the DuPont State Forest website at www.dupontforest.com for directions to Hooker Falls parking lot.

The City of Hendersonville will sponsor a secure, Shred Day for City residents on Wednesday, November 28, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., in the parking lot of Patton Park, 59 E. Clairmont Drive.
 Press release
from City of Hendersonville

Our customers are taking the initiative to conserve water usage inside their homes and making it more affordable by taking advantage of the City’s water rebate program. As of today, 20 customers have applied for WaterSense labeled low-flow toilet rebates and 30 customers have applied for Energy-Star labeled clothes washer rebates. The rebate program offers a $25 to $100 credit to people who purchase and install high-efficiency WaterSense labeled toilets, a $75 to $150 rebate for Energy-Star labeled clothes washers, and up to $200 for qualifying WaterSense labeled Smart irrigation system controllers.

High-efficiency toilets require less water at around 1.3 gallons per flush compared to traditional older toilets, which require 3.5 up to 7-gallons per flush. Energy-Star rated clothes washers save consumers an average of $70 per year. Smart irrigation system controllers take into account temperature, humidity, rainfall, soil moisture and other factors to reduce lawn watering significantly.

The City has allocated funds for the program and will continue to offer these rebates until they are exhausted, but even with the number of requests we have had so far, there are plenty of rebates remaining, according to Lee Smith, Utilities Director for the City. Our city council approved 240-HET rebates, 120-clothes washer rebates and 120-Smart irrigation system controllers for the current fiscal year, running from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.

The week after the 4th of July holiday, a history class about the places in Paris, France, that are related to our War of Independence will be held at Blue Ridge Community College – at both Transylvania and Henderson County campuses. The class in HendersonCounty will begin Wednesday, July 11, and be held on consecutive Wednesdays through July 25. InTransylvania, the class begins on Thursday, July 12 and will be held on consecutive Thursdays through July 26. Each course is 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $50.

This course -- “American History in Paris” -- is a Powerpoint presentation that takes students through the streets of Paris to see such places as where Benjamin Franklin lived while negotiating French support for the American colonists’ War of Independence. It will also show the grand building where 4,000 Parisians stood to mourn Franklin’s death years later. Students will discover where Thomas Jefferson bought many of the books that became the first volumes of our young country’s Library of Congress. The handsome statue of George Washington astride his horse, given to France by the women of the young United States in gratitude for French assistance during the war – students will learn where it is and see it.

“I learned so much about our own history,” said one former student. “I don’t remember studying any of these interesting facts in school. My next trip to Paris, I’ll take the map we got in class and stop by a few locations that I learned about. The whole course was really enlightening.”

Mary Jo Padgett, has based her course on a book she acquired and studied while living in Paris. She discovered more than twenty-three locations around the city where treaties were signed, statues erected, parks created, streets named, or plaques put on buildings – all relating to French involvement and support for the American Revolution.

Course information and registration forms are available on the college web site atwww.blueridge.edu. Preregistration is recommended. Get more information from Mary Jo at 828-697-9557 or maryjo@maryjopadgett.com or phone Cecile Duval, Transylvania campus, at 828- 694-1910, orceciled@blueridge.edu, or Martha Howell, Henderson campus, at 828-694-1743, or marthah@blueridge.edu.
