Conversion to a Rail Trail would be a great idea, but another wonderful idea would be to use the rail line for running a tourist railroad. As an active member of the SC RR Museum, with five miles of usable track, the idea of running trains on 18 miles of good track with phenomenal scenery makes my mouth water.
Usually the right of way is wide enough for both the track and a trail, though this would require more work, and more money. But make no mistake, though it would officially be "rail-banked", the possibility of rails ever being reinstalled is absolutely nil.

More on the story from the Hendersonville Times News:

William Ratchford, vice president of Triangle Real Estate, said his company owns Brittany Place close to the site of the proposed project, which will be called Ballantyne Commons.

“We envision Ballantyne Commons as a upgraded class or version of Brittany Place,” he said. “We will be offering one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. It will be a higher-class apartment with a brick, stone and vinyl exterior.”
