Hendersonville residents save $2,500 with city’s prescription-drug discount card

FROM THE CITY OF HENDERSONVILLE Hendersonville residents saved $2,500 last month on prescription drugs using the City’s free discount card. A monthly report issued by the National League of Cities ranks Hendersonville as the fifth highest beneficiary in North Carolina out of 23 participating cities. Hendersonville residents have saved almost $11,000 since the discount cards were first offered in September 2009. This translates into an average cost savings of approximately $10.80 per prescription. The free discount cards may be used by all residents of Hendersonville and have no restrictions based on the resident’s age, income level, or existing health coverage. The card can save an average of 20% off the price of commonly prescribed medications at 37 local pharmacies around the city and more than 60,000 participating retail pharmacies across the country. With the cost of prescription drugs increasing, this program makes it more affordable for residents to purchase drugs needed to help with short-term illnesses or chronic conditions. The discount card benefits not only those without insurance, but can also be used by underinsured residents to obtain prescriptions that are excluded from health benefit plans. “In the current economic climate, where many people are watching what they spend, the NLC prescription discount card offers significant savings on the purchase of prescription medications for our residents who are uninsured or have medications not covered by insurance,” said Mayor Barbara Volk. The City does not pay anything to NLC to participate in this program. Using the program is easy for residents. Cards can be printed at www.caremark.com/nlc and are available at Henderson County United Way offices, City Hall or by visiting the City’s website www.cityofhendersonville.org. Simply go to the Residents Section of the City’s website and click the Prescription Discount Program link. Users can visit www.caremark.com/nlc or call 1-888-620-1749 for assistance with the program. The program is administered by CVS Caremark.
